Srivijaya have the power of Resilience.
|
Founded by the warlord Sri Jayanasa through a union of different towns and villages in southern Sumatera and the seas beyond, Srivijaya, "Great and Victorious" is on the way to becoming a major power in the Spice Islands. Located at the very apex of maritime trade routes between Tang China and India, with the gold- and iron-rich Malayan Peninsula to its north, this new kingdom is a rising star and seems set on making its mark in the brave new world of 8th century Asian politics. But there remain many threats: while only trading vessels have plied the waters, it is no secret that the great wealth that the spice trade could attract will sooner or later draw unwanted attention from foreign lands The Muslim Arabs and Hindu Indians, whilst both vying for influence across the Middle East and Indian Ocean, have begun to take note of Buddhist Sivijaya's rise and while Srivijaya's contacts with them have been limited mostly to privateers and traders from both nations, there is no question that sooner or later war fleets will be despatched to the Srivijayan home islands. The north also poses perils for the new empire, for in their struggles for supremacy against each other, the Tang and Tibetans have been brought ever closer to southeast Asia, with the latter forming relations with the Palas of Bengal, who may well provide the intrepid Tibetans with a port on the Indian Ocean. In which case, Srivijaya will have to rely on her fleets, as well as cunning and surprise in order to turn back the foe. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
